Join a Club or Group

The easiest way to make new friends in a new city, or new lifestyle, is to join a club or group. That way you have a common interest (something to talk about) and a reason for being there.

You could get political and join an activist group or environmental group, get active with a sports group, go front or back stage with an amateur dramatics group, join a choir or a social group.

You can find groups Australia-wide sorted by state on the BCL.com.au site. See

Group Activities & Classes

If you rather something with less commitment and where it is normal to walk in alone, local classes offer lots of alternatives. Sometimes you click while sharing activities and will make one or two long term friends.

  • Writing classes - check with the Writers Centre for your state. You'll find links in the websites above.
  • Amateur Dramatics - check for amateur theatre groups in the websites above.
  • BCL/GoDo Creative Activities has single day and longer-term courses in everything from belly dancing to cookery to circus skills.
