Cheap Furniture

Buying furniture and appliances is one of the big start-up costs of moving out of home. Here are some online shops to help you get started in your new place on a budget.  Scroll down further for more tips.

Setting up house on a student budget

There are ways of significantly reducing the cost without resorting to milk crates:

  • Decide what you really need.  Before you rush out and buy anything, check with future roommates if your room is furnished. Even if it isn't, they might be happy to lend you some of their spare furniture.  Also find out what sized area you will be furnishing. If you have a tiny bedroom, there’s no point in buying lots of big furniture.
  • See if anyone you know wants to get rid of their old furniture or appliances. People are often happy to give it away or sell it at a great price to a uni student.  Try family, friends and their families, people at work, sporting clubs, gym, church, etc. Be specific about what you are after, or you will get offers for things you don't want or need.
  • Try the notice boards on campus, there are always people getting rid of their old stuff.  Consider it ‘road tested’ for the lifestyle. Also try second hand shops, including Lifeline and the Salvation Army. It is much cheaper than buying new, and there is often good quality furniture, even if it has ‘character’. Remember that couch covers can hide a multitude of aesthetic evils.
  • Discount stores are great, particularly for smaller items.  There is no point in paying $10 per glass when they smash the same as a $2 one.  Dinner sets, cutlery and kitchen gadgets are also much cheaper at these stores.  There are often cheap furnishings like cushions, vases and paintings as well.
